Map of Georgia Georgia: Rights of Conscripts
Vano Sogroev was conscripted into the Georgian Army on January 24, 2002, despite his diminutive weight (43 kg) and height (147 cm) and kidney disease. He was sick (he had a high temperature and suffered from kidney chronic decease) when he was taken to the drafting commission by force. Sogroev had applied to different agencies, but in vain. On May 2, 2002 Liberty Institute, a Georgian Human Rights NGO, secured a competent medical opinion, as a result of which Sogroev was released from military service. Liberty Institute communicated this information to the State Prosecutors' Office, where the investigation had begun. The head of the drafting commission declared that the conscription of Sogroev was a mistake and Sogroev subsequently was formally excused from his military obligation.
