Kosovo: National Action Plan for Gender Equality
Kosovar women of all ethnic groups, representing leadership positions in politics and civil society, came together for the first time to draft and present a comprehensive National Action Plan for Gender Equality for Kosovo. Covering such topics as economic justice and the rights of all citizens, a democratic society based on principles of equality and human rights, women and education, women and health, and women and culture, the plan draws on the successes of the USAID-funded women's leadership program, STAR. STAR had convened a hugely successful two-day, Kosovo-wide conference in November 2001 on women in the economy, which opened a path for the increased participation of women in Kosovo's economy, while identifying gender inequalities in other areas such as access to education as a major obstacle to girls' and women's political and economic equality.
All of the women involved in the work on the national action plan have been direct partners of the STAR leadership program. The drafting of the plan represents the first time that women leaders in politics and civil society worked closely together to build alliances across their respective sectors.
