“Cypriot Puzzle” Exhibition Spreads Message of Togetherness

Island-wide art competition features Cypriot Puzzle art exhibition.

In conflict zones all over the world, art has brought communities together. This concept provided the impetus for USAID support of an         island-wide art competition and subsequent traveling exhibition in Cyprus. The exhibition brightened the Cypriot landscape—physically and metaphorically—while using art to build bridges between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

The exhibition’s title, “Cypriot Puzzle,” was inspired by one of the winning works of art, entitled the “Human Puzzle,” created by a seven-year-old. The piece shows how all people are different and separate, but equal and related. Pieced together, different individual parts create a bright, new picture. Each piece is important on its own, as well as because of its contribution to a larger whole: a message with particular resonance in Cyprus.

The “Cypriot Puzzle”Exhibition traveled around the island throughout 2008, focusing attention and sparking reflection on issues of concern to Cypriots. Its message was and remains that the Cyprus’ rich cultural diversity should be cultivated and shared, through the visual arts and beyond.
