On May 26, 2009, Junior Achievement’s (JA) Student Business Day Competition brought together 63 successful young entrepreneurs from Baku, Ismayilli, Kurdamir, Agdash, and Yevlakh, Azerbaiajan. The event, held in Baku, was conducted as part of the Global Development Alliance (GDA) Initiative School Economics Education Program (SEE) funded by USAID, BP and its affliates (ACG, Shahdeniz, BTC, and SCP), StatoilHydro, Chevron, and Baker & McKenzie.
SEE is implemented by JA in a strategic partnership with Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Education.
Competition finalists presented their businesses and products to the panel of judges. Each judge was given 1,700 JA Dollars to invest in the businesses presented by the teams. The winning team, Baku School 164, earned 3,900 JA dollars, a special prize from HP Azerbaijan, and was named Student Company of the Year.
The Junior Achievement Student Companies program started in December 2008 and engaged 175 students from schools in and around Baku, Sumgayit, Kurdamir, Yevlakh, Ismayilli, Shirvan, Barda, Agdash, and Mingechevir. Through their participation in the comprehensive program, high school students gain valuable knowledge regarding entrepreneurship and business plan development.
