Kirkuk, Iraq, September 2003 - The Kirkuk Central Fire Station was was looted of most of its contents; windows and doors were broken; wiring pulled out, the back-up generator was destroyed; most of the building was damaged and equipment was destroyed or stolen. The ability of the fire department to respond to fire emergencies in this city of approximately 1 million inhabitants was severely compromised. One of Iraq Transition Initiatives objectives is to enhance capacity of local and national governments, the $51,320 grant from USAID's Office of Transition Initiatives provided the assistance needed to restore the department to working condition. |
